07. Houses

Somerton's houses are in the main built of the local stone, blue lias, and are of a rather uniform style, except for those in Broad Street, Cow Square and the Market Place which the fashionable areas in the heyday of Somerton, from about 1650 to 1840.

Many of them have been described in a book written by members of the Local History Group of the Somerton University of the Third Age. 'Somerton Houses: from Hill Head to Shorn Tree' is available @ £5.50 from the Local Information Centre.

In this web museum, we have used information from original documents relating to the houses to relate the families who have lived in them and their various uses over the last two or three hundred years.
