Skew Bridge

Skew Bridge lies on the boundary between Somerton and Charlton Mackrell where the line crosses the road from Somerton to Keinton Mandeville. It consists of six parallel arches, set off-centre. This photograph shows an early stage in the construction, with the piers for the arches complete. Most of the first and second arches are complete and the centring for the third is being inserted. another bridge is being constructed in the background and the lane up to Charlton Mackrell can be seen on the hillside beyond. It was said that the estimates for the bridge were so accurate that, when it was finished, only 26 surplus bricks remained.
