Viaduct 1

This is  one of many photographs of the construction of Somerton Viaduct from the Wooldridge album. The piers are complete, being built with great difficulty on foundations which go down 50 ft into the valley floor. They are 50 feet high. The first centring for the northernmost arch is being put in place using sheer-legs and tackle. The centring was made in the timber yard below the bridge. The steam-driven saw can be seen in the middle ground.
